Chalkida
Chalkida, a cosmopolitan centre, the hometown of Iseos, Lykofron, N. Skalkotas, Orestis Makris, Y. Skaribas, N. Kriezotis, Mytaras and of many other personalities, is living up a period of renaissance and cultural euphoria.
Tourists can sense the change of feelings in their soul by observing the unique
tidal currents of the strait which reverse direction several times a day. A
particularity of nature that has always caused the admiration and interest of
people, both from the astronomic and geophysics point, but also from the
philosophical point of view.
The fate of the city has always been and remains absolutely linked to that of
the Evripos Strait that divides the North and South Euboean Gulfs; a Strait
renown since antiquity for its strong tidal current. At the entrance of the town
we have the impressive Suspended Cable Bridge, whereas the Old Sliding Bridge is
used by visitors as an observation point to view the reversing strong tidal wave
of the waters.
Chalkis provides many remarkable buildings and monuments, such as the
Kanithos Castle, the Red House, the House with the Statues, the
Medieval Church of St. Paraskevi, the Turkish Mosque, the Medieval Aqueduct, the
Marble Spring….
The town also has an archeological and a folklore museum.
